Ljubljana Zoo, Zoo in Tivoli Landscape Park, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana Zoo sits on the southern slope of Rožnik hill, a forested area on the edge of the city. The paths wind through wooded sections and open enclosures that house animals from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
The zoo opened in March 1949, starting with a modest collection of animals. Over the following decades it gradually grew into a larger park with a wider variety of species.
The zoo focuses on animals from the Alpine, Pannonian, and Mediterranean regions, helping visitors understand the diverse habitats found across this part of Europe. The enclosures are designed to reflect how these animals live in nature.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with clear paths and good signage throughout. Allow at least half a day to move comfortably through the different sections without rushing.
Visitors can join guided feeding sessions where they help zookeepers feed animals such as sea lions, tigers, or giraffes. This kind of hands-on access is not common in many European zoos and gives a closer look at daily animal care.
