Kaohsiung Harbor Cross-Harbor Tunnel, Submarine tunnel in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Kaohsiung Harbor Cross-Harbor Tunnel is a submarine passage beneath the harbor that links the Chien-chen Fishery Harbor with Chi-chin Island. The structure allows vehicles to travel directly across the water without using ferries or longer surface routes.
Construction began in May 1981 and took three years to complete, with the official opening on May 18, 1984. It was Taiwan's first underwater tunnel project and represented a major milestone in the nation's engineering history.
The completion of this engineering achievement was commemorated with a special postage stamp issued in 1985, featuring artwork by designer Lee Kuang-chi.
The tunnel provides a direct route for vehicles between downtown Kaohsiung and the harbor area. Vehicles can use the passage during regular traffic hours with traffic flowing in both directions.
The project was notable for using advanced underwater construction methods that were innovative for its time. The tunnel's technical achievement demonstrated Taiwan's growing capabilities in modern infrastructure development.
