Amnicon Falls State Park, State park in Douglas County, US.
Amnicon Falls State Park protects a series of cascading waterfalls where the Amnicon River drops through layered sandstone formations surrounded by dense forests of red and white pine. The river descends in natural steps across several hundred acres, creating distinct waterfall sections along its course.
The area held deep importance for Ojibwe communities over centuries before becoming a state park in 1961 to protect the natural waterfalls. Wisconsin's conservation efforts focused on preserving the river system and its geological features for future visitors and residents.
The name Amnicon comes from the Ojibwe language, reflecting the Native American communities who made their homes near these waters long before European arrival.
Walking paths and facilities are accessible year-round, with camping and picnic areas available throughout the park. Summer visitors can use designated swimming zones along the river, while winter visitors should prepare for seasonal conditions on the trails.
Ancient lava flows shaped the landscape and created the sandstone formations that divide the water into distinct levels, a geological story written into the river itself. This history remains visible in every cascade and step the water takes.
