Barbour County, County district in north central West Virginia, United States
Barbour County extends across 343 square miles of terrain in the Allegheny Plateau, with the Tygart Valley River flowing through its central section.
The Virginia Legislature established Barbour County in 1843 from sections of Harrison, Lewis, and Randolph counties, naming it after Supreme Court Justice Philip Pendleton Barbour.
The county maintains strong agricultural traditions through farmers markets, livestock production, and yearly events at the Barbour County Fairgrounds.
The county seat of Philippi provides administrative services, while Belington and Junior offer additional municipal facilities for the 15,465 residents recorded in 2020.
The Battle of Philippi on June 3, 1861, marked the first land engagement of the American Civil War, resulting in a rapid Confederate retreat.
