Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Opera house in City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia, Spain
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia is a modern opera house located in Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences, featuring four distinct performance halls designed for different types of productions. The building houses spaces ranging from large concert venues to intimate theater rooms for various musical events.
The building opened in 2006 with Beethoven's Fidelio as its inaugural performance, quickly establishing itself as a major opera center in the region. It formed part of Valencia's larger cultural redevelopment project that transformed the old riverbed into an arts district.
The main hall accommodates 1,412 spectators while the Teatre Martin i Soler, situated under the Turia riverbed, specializes in baroque opera and chamber music.
Visitors can move freely through the building and enjoy the striking architecture from outside, or take guided tours to see the interior spaces. The best time to visit is outside of performance hours, when the halls are accessible and less crowded.
Beneath the building sits a theater positioned directly under what was once the old riverbed, a rarely known architectural feature. This underground auditorium creates a distinct experience and showcases the creative spatial planning of the site.
