Loro Parque, Zoo and bird park in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain
Loro Parque is a zoo and bird park in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, Spain, covering more than 13 hectares and home to thousands of birds and marine mammals. The grounds include themed zones with aquariums, outdoor enclosures and covered halls where visitors can observe animals from different climate regions around the world.
Wolfgang Kiessling founded the site in December 1972 with 150 parrots on roughly one hectare of land. Over the decades the park grew through extensions and new enclosures to become one of the largest zoological facilities in the Canary Islands.
The Spanish name translates to Parrot Park and reflects how the facility started as a home for these colorful birds before growing into a broader collection. Families and school groups often visit to watch feeding demonstrations and learn about species from rainforests, oceans and polar regions through hands-on displays.
The site opens at half past eight in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, so guests should plan several hours for a full visit. Wheelchair accessible paths and lifts make most areas reachable, though some sections involve slopes.
The facility holds the European record for the largest indoor penguin enclosure and the longest underwater tunnel through a shark tank. It also houses the world's most extensive collection of parrot species gathered in one place.
