Lake Enol, Mountain lake in Picos de Europa National Park, Spain
Lake Enol sits in the Picos de Europa at around 1070 meters elevation, ringed by the peaks of Mosquital, Enol mountain, and Sobornín hill. The water covers a small area and is surrounded by steep slopes and natural vegetation.
The lake formed through glacial processes as ancient ice sheets retreated from the Cantabrian Mountains during earlier geological times. This glacial heritage continues to shape the form and landscape around it today.
On September 8, local residents gather for a ceremony to retrieve a submerged statue of the Virgin Mary from the water. This annual tradition ties the community to the lake and shows how sacred this place remains in local religious life.
You can reach the lake via a mountain road from Covadonga that climbs through high terrain with steady elevation gain. Visitors should prepare for changeable mountain weather and wear sturdy footwear.
In summer and autumn, the water forms distinct temperature layers that separate and create different living zones. As late fall temperatures drop, these layers mix back together again.
