Monumento a los enamorados, Memorial monument in Campo Santo de los Mártires, Córdoba, Spain
The Monumento a los enamorados is a memorial in the Campo Santo de los Mártires in Córdoba composed of four columns supporting a small temple structure. A marble sculpture at its center depicts two touching hands and was created by artist Pablo Yusti Conejo.
The memorial was inaugurated in 1971 and commemorates the relationship between 11th-century poet Ibn Zaydun and Princess Wallada, daughter of an Umayyad caliph. Their love story unfolded during a time of great poetic and intellectual flourishing in Córdoba.
The memorial displays inscriptions of love poems in Spanish and Arabic, reflecting the literary traditions that flourished in medieval Córdoba. These two languages side by side reveal the cultural diversity that shaped the city during that era.
The memorial stands in the Campo Santo de los Mártires, part of Córdoba's UNESCO World Heritage Site, and remains accessible throughout the year. The surroundings are pleasant for walking and offer views of the city's historic center.
The two hands on the marble base were originally meant to symbolize the connection between Ibn Zaydun and Wallada before their relationship ended in exile and conflict. This depiction captures the tension between their earlier closeness and their later separation in a poetic way.
