Formentera, Mediterranean island near Ibiza, Spain

Formentera is a Mediterranean island in the Balearic Islands, Spain, covering roughly 83 square kilometers. It consists of several small villages linked by narrow roads and bike paths, along with sandy coastlines and shallow bays.

From the early 15th century until around 1700, the island was left empty because pirates from North Africa threatened the region. Afterward, families from neighboring Ibiza began to settle here again.

The name Formentera comes from the Latin word for wheat, recalling a time when farming shaped daily life here. Today the island is known for simple white houses and fishermen who moor their boats at small harbors.

Ferries run regularly between Ibiza Town and the port of La Savina, as this is the only way to reach the island. Bicycles are a popular way to get around since the roads tend to be flat.

The seabed around the coast holds large meadows of Posidonia seagrass, which help keep the water remarkably clear. Several musicians including Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix spent time here looking for inspiration for their work.
