Neuilly-sur-Seine, Administrative division in Grand Paris, France
Neuilly-sur-Seine is a commune west of Paris that follows the course of the river. Streets run through residential quarters with gardens and wide avenues, interrupted by modern office towers and diplomatic properties.
A charter of the Abbey of Saint-Denis first mentioned this place in 1222. During territorial reorganization in the mid-19th century, the commune lost a large portion of its land to Paris.
The original place name refers to a new settlement site near water, pointing to medieval patterns of growth along the Seine. Today visitors notice large embassy buildings and company headquarters that shape the character of this western suburban area.
Metro Line 1 stops at three stations within the commune and links the riverside area to the center of Paris. Walking paths along the Seine offer a direct route west toward bridges and parks.
During the 1900 Olympic Games, the competitions for basque pelota took place here. It was one of the few sports that appeared only once in the Olympic program.
