Lac des Confins, Glacial lake in La Clusaz, France.
Lac des Confins is a glacial lake located at 1450 meters in the Aravis range, nestled among alpine meadows and surrounded by steep mountain walls. The water fills a natural basin carved into limestone, with forest-covered slopes descending on several sides.
The lake was carved out by glacial movement during the last ice age, when massive ice sheets ground through the limestone bedrock. As the climate warmed and glaciers retreated roughly 10000 years ago, meltwater filled the depression to create this body of water.
The lake serves as a natural gathering place where hikers pause to take in the surrounding peaks and reflect on their mountain journey.
The lake can be reached via hiking trails starting from parking areas near La Clusaz village. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and check weather conditions, as mountain conditions change quickly throughout the day.
During winter, the lake surface freezes solid beneath the snow, creating a natural ice platform high in the mountains. This transformation makes the frozen lake accessible to walk across, offering a rare experience of moving across ice surrounded by snow-covered peaks.
