Grande Balmaz is a 2,616-metre summit on the ridge of the Aravis Range, on the border between Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Its highest point is a blunt grey tower of fractured sedimentary rock, joined by a steep, crumbling ridge of layered slabs to a sharper crest on the right. Green grass grows on the lower slopes below the ridgeline.

Grande Balmaz stands on the border between Savoie and Haute-Savoie, in the Aravis Range, at 2,616 metres. The sources record no founding event or dated episode for the summit; its history is that of the ridge on which it sits. Northwest of the peak the crest continues down between the combe de la Balme, above La Clusaz, and the combe de la Torchère, carrying the Grande Torchère at 2,521 metres and the Petite Torchère at 2,091 metres.

The summit sits on the border between Savoie and Haute-Savoie, above the combe de la Balme on the La Clusaz side to the north and the combe de la Torchère to the south. The ridge running northwest from the peak carries two further tops, the Grande Torchère at 2,521 m and the Petite Torchère at 2,091 m.

Approaches follow the ridge descending northwest, where the Grande Torchère (2,521 m) and Petite Torchère (2,091 m) stand. The upper faces are fractured grey and tan slabs cut by diagonal gullies, so plan for loose, angular rock near the top.

Grande Balmaz lies on the ridge between the combe de la Balme, above La Clusaz to the north, and the combe de la Torchère to the south. Continuing northwest along that crest stand the Grande Torchère at 2,521 m and the Petite Torchère at 2,091 m.
