Csórréti-víztározó

Csórréti-víztározó, reservoir in Hungary

The Csórréti-víztározó is a man-made reservoir in the Mátra mountains, sitting at about 535 meters (1,755 feet) above sea level and ranking among the highest in the country. Five permanent streams feed the water body, bringing fresh water from nearby mountains, and it covers roughly 13 hectares with a capacity exceeding one million cubic meters.

The reservoir was built in 1977 to supply clean water to nearby villages such as Galyatető and Mátraszentimre. Since then, it has served as a reliable water source for communities in the region, sustaining their supply over the decades.

The name Csórréti comes from the nearby village and connects people to this location. The reservoir is part of the Mátra Landscape Protection Area, reflecting how the local community balances human needs with nature conservation and values the preservation of their water source.

Access is currently restricted to protect water quality and prevent pollution. Visitors can view the reservoir from surrounding hiking trails and nearby viewpoints, which offer wide views of the mountain landscape and forest surroundings.

This is one of Hungary's highest reservoirs, held in place by a significant dam structure positioned along a steep hillside. Its remote location within a protected mountain area makes it a special place that demonstrates how human water needs and nature conservation work together.
