Mátra

Mátra is a mountain range in Heves County built on volcanic rock that creates varied terrain with different plant and animal communities along its slopes. The landscape consists of rolling hills at different elevations, covered by forests, meadows, and farmland.

The range formed through intense volcanic activity millions of years ago during the Miocene epoch, with volcanic deposits building up over time. Erosion then shaped these materials into the hills we see today.

The Kékes peak within this range stands as the highest point in the entire country at over 1,000 meters. From its summit, visitors on clear days can see across much of Hungary's landscape.
