Godchinamalaki Falls, Two-tiered waterfall in Belagavi district, Karnataka, India
Godchinamalaki Falls is a two-tiered waterfall in Belagavi district where the Markandeya River descends over rocky terrain. The main cascade drops around 25 meters, followed by a secondary drop, creating a total descent of approximately 45 meters.
The Markandeya River that forms these falls has historically served an important role in the region's water systems. Later developments included the construction of two major dams on the nearby Ghataprabha River, into which the Markandeya flows, to support irrigation and water management.
Local people visit the site for spiritual reasons, drawn by nearby temples such as Gurusiddeshwar Temple and Nirvaneshwara Matha that shape daily worship practices. The falls play a role in regional religious life and are used as a place of ritual bathing and prayer.
You can reach the falls using regular bus services from Belgaum, traveling through Ankalagi and Pachhapur, with the nearest railway station about 8 kilometers away. The best time to visit is during and shortly after the monsoon season when water flow is abundant and paths are dry enough for walking.
During monsoon season from June to September, the water creates natural swimming pools as it cascades over the granite rock formations. These pools form in the way water collects in rock basins and provide refreshing spots during the hottest months of the year.
