Malegaon Fort

Malegaon Fort is a fortified structure located on the north bank of the Mausam River with thick defensive walls and entrance gates guarded by mounted cannons. The interior holds multiple buildings and chambers arranged within the outer walls.

Construction began in 1740 when Naro Shankar Raje Bahadur, a Peshwa general, commissioned the fort and brought skilled craftsmen from Surat and northern India. The project reflected the military engineering and construction methods of mid-18th century regional powers.

A school operates within the fort complex, showing how this historical structure remains woven into the daily life of the local community. This blend of past and present use keeps the place alive beyond its historical role.

The location sits near Ramsetu bridge along National Highway 3, making it easy to reach by road and very accessible for most visitors. Walking around the grounds is straightforward, and the setting next to the river provides clear orientation.

The fort features remarkably thick defensive walls built to withstand sustained attack, demonstrating the engineering demands of its era. A distinctive hexagonal well inside the grounds shows the precision craftsmanship applied even to functional structures.
