Salher, Mountain fort in Baglan region, Maharashtra, India
Salher is a mountain fort in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, rising to 1567 meters above sea level. The structure spreads across multiple terraces with bastions, watchtowers, and thick stone walls that follow the natural ridgeline.
The Battle of Salher in 1672 was the first major victory of Maratha forces over Mughal armies in an open-field clash. This turning point strengthened the military position of the Marathas in the region considerably.
The fort complex includes ancient temples, stone-carved water cisterns, and architectural elements that reflect the military engineering methods of medieval Maharashtra.
The climb starts from Waghembe village and requires a full day through steep terrain with few water sources along the way. The route passes over rocky sections, so sturdy footwear and enough drinking water are necessary.
A narrow mountain ridge connects the fort to neighboring Salota Fort, forming a natural defensive corridor. From the summit, the view extends far beyond the borders of Maharashtra into Gujarat.
