Galna Fort is a stone fortress located at approximately 2000 meters elevation between Malegaon and Dhule, featuring multiple bastions and fortified entrance gates. The structure follows a mountain fort layout with strong walls that adapt to the natural terrain.
The fort was ruled by various governors, including Malik Ahmed Shah Nizam of Ahmadnagar who controlled it in the early 1500s, and later the Mughals under Aurangzeb. These transitions reflect the shifting political landscape of the region.
The fort displays architectural elements from different periods, including a mosque and stones inscribed in Persian script from earlier rulers.
The best way to reach the fort is by bus to Dongarale village, followed by a trek of about 4 kilometers to the fortress. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the climb can be steep and exposed.
The fort sits on the historic trade route between Burhanpur and Surat, where it monitored the movement of goods between northern and southern India. This strategic location made it a vital checkpoint for all caravans crossing the region.
