Hargad

Hargad is a hill fort situated on the Selbari ridge between the fertile Khandesh lands and the port of Surat. From its position, visitors can see mountain peaks and valleys that surround it and understand why this location was chosen for defense.

The fort served as a lookout point along the ancient trade route connecting Burhanpur and Surat. Its location near Mulher Fort created a defensive system that helped control this important commercial passage.

A temple to goddess Kapaar Bhavani sits within a cave at the fort, showing the religious traditions valued by people in Maharashtra. Visitors walking through the fort notice how this shrine remains part of daily spiritual practice for local pilgrims.

The climb from Mulher village to the pass between the two forts takes about two hours over rocky terrain. Bring water and snacks as there are no facilities or shops available along the path.

The fort plateau holds a cannon and three gates in varying states of decay that show its military past. Rock-cut water cisterns and caves scattered below reveal how residents once stored water during dry periods.
