Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Academic health centre and trauma hospital in North York, Toronto, Canada
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is an academic health centre and trauma hospital operating three specialized campuses across the Toronto area. The main Bayview location, Holland Centre for orthopedics, and St. John's Rehab facility each serve distinct patient populations and medical needs.
The institution began in 1919 as Toronto Military Orthopaedic Hospital, initially serving patients with orthopedic injuries. A major expansion occurred in 1948 following a land donation from Joseph and Alice Kilgour, which led to the creation of a dedicated veterans hospital.
The facility houses Canada's largest veterans centre in the Kilgour and George Hees wings, serving those who served in major conflicts. This specialized section reflects the institution's deep commitment to supporting former military personnel.
The centre connects to downtown Toronto through free shuttle services and multiple TTC transit routes for easy visitor access. The different campuses are clearly marked and emergency services operate around the clock.
The centre established the first academic Department of Family and Community Medicine at a University of Toronto teaching hospital in 1967. This pioneering department set new standards for medical education and patient care.
