Reconstructed Roman hostel

The Reconstructed Roman Hostel is an accommodation facility near Xanten using period-appropriate building techniques and materials. The structure features Roman concrete foundations, wooden beams, and stone walls arranged in traditional patterns, with separate areas for sleeping and dining.

The facility developed as the Roman Empire expanded into Germania, serving merchants and officials traveling the northern frontier trade routes. It became a crucial part of infrastructure for long-distance commerce during the occupation period.

The separate dining and sleeping areas reflect Roman social structure between wealthy travelers and ordinary merchants. This division allows visitors to understand how accommodation differed based on a person's status.

The site is open daily from April through October with guided tours available in German and English. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow enough time to explore all areas at a comfortable pace.

The reconstruction incorporates original foundation stones discovered during archaeological excavations, maintaining precise measurements from the Roman period. This allows visitors to experience the quality and precision of Roman craftsmanship firsthand.
