Dikhil Region, Administrative region in southern Djibouti
The Dikhil Region extends across 7,200 square kilometers of land, making it the largest administrative division within the national territory of Djibouti.
French authorities established military and administrative posts in March 1928, leading to the creation of a new administrative district with Dikhil as its capital by 1930.
The population of 88,948 inhabitants comprises both Afar and Issa Somali communities, with many residents maintaining traditional nomadic lifestyles across the region.
The RN-1 National Highway connects the region to Djibouti City, with regular bus services operating between these locations throughout the week.
Archaeological excavations at the Handoga site revealed ancient engravings and artifacts from the fourth millennium BC, indicating early human settlements in this area.
