Sagallo, Coastal settlement in Tadjourah Region, Djibouti

Sagallo is a coastal settlement in the Tadjourah Region that faces the Gulf of Tadjoura, providing direct access to fishing grounds and maritime trade routes. The village functions as a working harbor community where the sea remains central to daily life.

In 1889, Russian adventurer Nikolai Ashinov established a settlement here called New Moscow that collapsed after French military intervention just weeks later. The site had previously hosted an Egyptian fort, making it a brief chapter in imperial rivalry over the Horn of Africa.

The community is shaped by seafaring traditions and Islamic faith, with the local mosque serving as the central gathering point where residents meet regularly.

Travel is easier during cooler months, as coastal temperatures can become extremely hot during peak summer. Getting there requires arranging transport through Tadjoura, and planning ahead is important for a comfortable visit.

The village holds ruins of an Egyptian fort that later became the setting for an unusual Russian colonial venture. These architectural remains are silent witnesses to a rare moment when a Northern European power briefly attempted control over this remote coastal location.
