Mansoura

Mansoura sits on the eastern bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile, around 120 kilometers northeast of Cairo. The university here runs the largest nephrology and urology center in the Middle East and North Africa region.

In 1250 Egyptian troops defeated the armies of King Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade and captured him. This battle marked a turning point in the history of medieval conflicts in the region.

The National Museum inside Dar Ibn Lockman displays military pieces such as armor and swords from the crusader period. Visitors can view paintings of battle scenes that recall the medieval conflicts along the Nile.

Most points of interest sit within walking distance along the Nile riverbank. Early morning or late afternoon visits work better to avoid midday heat.

The house where King Louis IX was held prisoner in 1250 still stands today and preserves personal items belonging to the monarch. Among the exhibits is a thirteenth-century toilet the king used during his captivity.
