Desouk Bridge, Railway bridge in Desouk, Egypt

Desouk Bridge is a steel truss railway bridge that spans approximately 610 meters across the Nile Delta. It connects Desouk with Rahmaniyah Markaz and is divided into two sections by an island in the middle.

Construction was started in 1897 under Khedive Abbas Helmi II, with support from French company La Maison Sereau-Louis during the initial building phase. The structure underwent major renovations in 1926 when Dorman Long replaced steel components and reinforced the piers.

The bridge stands near the tomb of Ibrahim El Desouki, where annual celebrations in October draw more than one million visitors from various provinces and countries.

The bridge is an active structure that carries train traffic while allowing river vessels to pass underneath. Visitors should know it is mainly used for rail transport, so access may be limited or restricted.

The bridge functions as a swing structure that rotates to allow river vessels to pass, while maintaining railway operations above. This mechanical solution was designed to serve two different transportation needs on a single crossing.
