Abadiyeh, Archaeological site in Nome 7 of Upper Egypt.

Abadiyeh is an archaeological site on the western bank of the Nile River containing multiple cemeteries with burial grounds from different Egyptian periods. The graves and their contents span from prehistoric times through later eras, offering insights into daily life and funerary practices of ancient people.

The site was excavated between 1898 and 1899 by British archaeologist William Matthew Flinders Petrie, who documented findings from prehistoric and predynastic times. His work provided crucial information about the earliest periods of Egyptian civilization.

The cemeteries here show how people prepared their dead for the afterlife and what objects they considered important for that journey. Walking through the site, you can observe how burial customs changed across different periods and what they reveal about Egyptian beliefs.

The site is located roughly 12 kilometers (7 miles) west of Dendera and can be reached with basic navigation. Keep in mind this is a remote excavation area best explored with a local guide who knows the terrain and can explain what you are seeing.

The excavation reports from 1901 broke new ground in archaeological documentation and established methods still used in fieldwork today. This systematic approach revolutionized how researchers recorded and studied ancient burial sites across Egypt.
