KV50, Burial chamber in Valley of the Kings, Egypt
KV50 is an underground tomb in the Valley of the Kings featuring a shaft that descends into a burial chamber. The main chamber contains animal remains and is partially filled with ancient debris and sediment.
Edward R. Ayrton discovered this site in 1906 while conducting excavations for Theodore M. Davis. The find revealed ancient burial practices and contributed to understanding how animals were treated in death.
This tomb is part of a cluster of animal burials, showing that pets received formal burial care in ancient times. Visitors can observe how valued these animals were to their owners in daily life.
Access to this tomb is available during standard Valley operating hours with a site ticket. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the underground chamber can be confined and the outdoor area becomes very hot.
Excavations in 2009 uncovered pottery and tools from the Eighteenth Dynasty along with ostraca fragments. These sherds display scenes of a seated queen making ritual offerings, offering rare insight into religious imagery.
