KV9, Ancient royal tomb in Valley of the Kings, Egypt
KV9 is a royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings that stretches 116 meters underground through connected corridors and chambers. The walls are covered with hieroglyphic inscriptions depicting celestial maps and religious texts.
Construction began under Ramses V around 1147 BCE, but was later expanded by Ramses VI who made it his final resting place. The takeover by Ramses VI shows how pharaohs adapted and repurposed royal projects from their predecessors.
The walls display astronomical ceiling decorations and religious texts that represent the pharaoh's journey to the afterlife. Visitors can see depictions of stars and deities that describe the path beyond death.
Access requires a separate ticket distinct from the Valley of the Kings entrance, and opening hours vary by season. Visitors should navigate carefully as the path goes below ground level with narrow, lengthy corridors.
The walls bear graffiti left by ancient Greeks and Romans, showing the tomb was visited by tourists over 2000 years ago. These scratches document how the monument attracted people from different cultures across millennia.
