KV49, Ancient tomb in Valley of the Kings, Egypt
KV49 is a tomb chamber in the Valley of the Kings measuring approximately 3.5 meters in length with several underground rooms. A network of corridors and passageways connects the various chambers throughout the structure.
The tomb dates to the Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient Egypt and was discovered in 1906 by Edward R. Ayrton during excavations for Theodore M. Davis. This discovery occurred during an intensive period of exploring the necropolis.
The interior walls display handwritten graffiti recording official visits and the delivery of royal linens during the reigns of Ramesses XI and Smendes I.
The tomb entrance is reached by a staircase leading to the first doorway, followed by a long sloping corridor. Visitors should expect tight spaces and uneven ground throughout.
Archaeological findings include limestone game boards and an ostracon naming Hay, who served as overseer of workmen at the Place of Truth. These items shed light on the daily lives of people who worked at this necropolis.
