El Mahalla El Kubra

El Mahalla El Kubra stands as the largest urban settlement in the Nile Delta region, positioned along the western bank of the Damietta Branch tributary.

The city maintained its position as the provincial capital until 1836, when administrative functions transferred to Tanta, marking a significant shift in regional governance.

The establishment of the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company transformed the city into a major textile manufacturing hub, employing over 27,000 workers in cotton production.

Located 110 kilometers from Cairo and 120 kilometers from Alexandria, the city connects through major transportation routes to other significant Egyptian urban centers.

During December 2012, the city declared temporary autonomy from the central government, demonstrating its independent spirit through collective civic action.
