El Mahalla El Kubra

El Mahalla El Kubra is the largest settlement in the Nile Delta, positioned on the western bank of the Damietta branch. The city functions as a major cotton processing center with several large factories that shape its character.

The city served as the provincial capital until 1836, when administration moved to Tanta. The establishment of the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company in the 20th century transformed it into an industrial textile hub.

The city's identity is deeply rooted in textile manufacturing, which has shaped daily life here for generations. Many families have worked in the factories, creating a strong sense of shared purpose among residents.

The city sits roughly 110 kilometers from Cairo and 120 kilometers from Alexandria, with good road connections to other Egyptian cities. Getting around locally is straightforward due to the compact urban layout.

In December 2012, the city briefly declared autonomy from central government as an act of community solidarity. This event reveals how strongly residents value their collective voice in governance.
