Deir el-Bahari, Archaeological site in Luxor, Egypt.

Description

Deir el-Bahari is a mortuary temple complex featuring three ascending terraces connected by ramps and bordered by rows of limestone columns that rise against the cliffs. The structure integrates carved chambers and halls into the rock face, creating a unified design with the natural landscape.

History

The complex was built around 1490 BCE under Queen Hatshepsut's rule and marked a turning point in Egyptian temple design. The construction survived millennia and remains a landmark of ancient architecture.

Culture

The temple walls show carved scenes of an ancient trading journey to the Land of Punt, revealing how people conducted business across distant lands.

Practical

The site is open daily and can be explored on foot, with wide ramps providing access between the terraces. Visitors should arrive early to avoid heat and have time to walk through the carved chambers and halls.

Did you know?

In 1881, workers discovered a hidden chamber containing dozens of royal mummies, including some of Egypt's most famous pharaohs. The find was one of the largest treasures from ancient Egypt and changed how we understand that era.
