DB320, Royal tomb in Deir el-Bahari, Egypt
DB320 is a subterranean complex in Deir el-Bahari with several passages cut more than 23 meters into the limestone cliff face. The branching chambers served as a repository for coffins and burial goods that accumulated in this hidden location over centuries.
Émile Brugsch discovered the complex in 1881 and found more than 50 mummified bodies of rulers and high-ranking individuals from different periods inside. The priesthood had relocated these burials here during the 21st Dynasty to protect them from looters.
The burial site demonstrates Egyptian preservation techniques through its collection of mummified remains, funeral equipment, and ornamental vessels from different dynasties.
The burial site lies across from modern Luxor within the larger archaeological zone of the Theban Necropolis. The climate conditions on the western Nile bank create dry air that helps preserve the subterranean structures.
The chambers contained a mummified eunuch who had been buried with royal status. This burial shows that certain court officials received access to privileged burial locations despite not belonging to the ruling family.
