Sohag, Regional capital on the Nile in Egypt

Sohag is a regional city located along the western bank of the Nile River, with two distinct island areas and agricultural land at 67 meters elevation. The city stretches for several kilometers, showing a mix of modern buildings and traditional neighborhoods that grew up around the river.

The city grew from an ancient village called Suhay, built on top of earlier settlements including Bompae, Tmupaie, and Bay. These layers show how the area remained an important settlement along the Nile for thousands of years.

The El-Farshuti Mosque shows architectural details from the Mamluk period, with inscriptions from different sultans on its walls and a distinctive minaret. Walking through the courtyard, you can see how local craftsmen combined Islamic design with regional building traditions.

An international airport links the region to major cities, and a local university serves thousands of students. Summers are hot and dry here, so plan your visit timing and bring plenty of water if you explore on foot.

Digs in 2019 uncovered a Ptolemaic tomb holding a nobleman named Toutou, complete with limestone coffins and preserved mummified animals. This find reveals how important people were honored with elaborate burial practices in this area long ago.
