Scorpion Prison, Prison in Egypt
Scorpion Prison is a high-security facility near Tura designed to hold inmates in restricted conditions. The cells are very small, often just a few meters wide, with concrete platforms instead of beds and without windows or ventilation.
The facility was built in the early 1990s after Egyptian officers brought ideas from the United States, opening in 1993 and quickly becoming known for holding political detainees and activists. Over the decades it has grown into a symbol of strict detention practices in the country.
The location is southeast of Cairo and about 2 kilometers from the main entrance of the larger Tora complex. As it is isolated and secured with high walls and guarded gates, public access is not possible.
The facility was specifically designed with an H-shaped cell structure to prevent inmates from communicating with one another. Thick concrete walls block sound and light is controlled by guards, maximizing isolation.
