TT33, Ancient tomb in El-Assasif, Theban Necropolis, Egypt.
TT33 is an ancient tomb in El-Assasif within the Theban Necropolis that extends about 20 meters below ground. The interior contains twenty-two rooms connected by an extensive network of corridors and passages throughout the structure.
The tomb was first documented in 1737 by Richard Pocoke and underwent major examination in 1881 under Johannes Dümichen from Strasbourg University. These early investigations established the foundation for scientific study of the site.
The walls display religious inscriptions that reveal the ancient Egyptian understanding of the afterlife. Walking through the decorated passages, you sense how deeply these beliefs shaped daily life and death rituals.
Entry into the interior requires physical preparation as you navigate through narrow corridors and descend staircases. Bring sturdy footwear and plan for an extended underground visit.
Excavations in 2018 uncovered over one thousand ushabti figurines and an unopened sarcophagus containing the mummy of a woman named Thuya. These discoveries offer rare insights into burial practices and provisions prepared for the afterlife.
