TT55 Ramose, Noble tomb in Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, Egypt

TT55 Ramose is a noble tomb in the Sheikh Abd el-Qurna necropolis with a spacious hall supported by thirty-two columns. The walls contain detailed carvings that blend traditional Egyptian artistic forms with early artistic features from the Amarna period.

Ramose served as Vizier during the transition between Amenhotep III and Akhenaten, managing state affairs for both rulers during an era of major change. His tomb documents a moment when Egyptian artistic tradition itself was being questioned.

The funeral scenes show people in white clothing mourning the deceased official while priests perform rituals beside them. These depictions give you a direct sense of how burials were conducted and what mattered in the religious practices of ancient Egypt.

The tomb is open during daylight hours, and admission gives you access to two neighboring tombs as well. The site can be hot and sunny, so bring appropriate clothing and water.

Sections of the burial chamber were intentionally left unfinished and still show the artists initial sketches and guidelines. These incomplete areas offer rare glimpses into the daily work and techniques of ancient Egyptian artisans.
