Tt96

TT96 is a burial chamber in the Sheikh Abd el-Qurna necropolis with detailed wall paintings depicting funeral processions, offerings, and scenes from the Egyptian afterlife. The walls show complex religious scenes reflecting daily life and hopes for the next world.

The burial chamber was built during the New Kingdom period around 1550 to 1069 BC and served as the final resting place for Sennefer and his wife Meryt. This era was a flourishing time for building elaborate tombs with artistic decoration.

The painted walls show Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife through ceremonies like the mouth-opening ritual, which was meant to prepare people for their journey to the other world.

This site is located within the Theban Necropolis complex and is accessible through guided tours that take visitors through various ancient burial chambers. It helps to bring comfortable shoes and water, as exploring the area requires time and physical effort.

The ceiling painting shows fine details of scenes where Meryt offers incense and food to the deceased and depicts him resting under trees. This intimate portrayal of married life and daily moments was an unusual choice in Egyptian tomb imagery.
