Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, Catholic church in Taganana, Tenerife, Spain.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves is a church with three naves separated by rounded arches supported by Tuscan columns. The thick masonry walls feature red tuff stone corners that give the structure its distinctive appearance.
The original structure dates from 1505, with the current main chapel completed in 1728. It was one of the first parishes established after the conquest of the island.
The wooden statue of the Virgin of Las Nieves, discovered on a nearby beach before 1506, remains the central religious element here. It shapes the character of this place and continues to be a focus of local devotion.
The church underwent major renovations in 2016, with new marble floors, waterproofing, and accessibility features added throughout. A fire detection system was also installed to ensure the building's safety.
During the 1959 reconstruction, local residents transported construction materials and sand from the beach along steep mountain paths. This remarkable effort shows how deeply the community was committed to restoring their church.
