Gilgel Gibe III Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Southern Nations region, Ethiopia
Gilgel Gibe III is a hydroelectric dam spanning 610 meters across the Omo River equipped with ten vertical turbines for power generation. The concrete structure channels electricity into the national grid to supply power across the country.
Construction began in 2006 and finished in 2016, making it a major step forward in Ethiopia's power production. This completion allowed the country to significantly increase its electricity generation capacity.
The dam has changed how local communities like the Mursi, Kwegu, and Bodi relate to the river that shaped their daily rhythms for generations. These populations had to adjust their herding patterns and seasonal movements because of the altered water flow.
The dam is located in a mountainous region south of Addis Ababa and can be reached by road, though the route is remote. Visitors should check whether access to the site is permitted, as it is a critical national infrastructure facility.
The structure rises between two elevation levels and creates a massive water body behind it that reshapes the landscape. This reservoir influences the climate and ecosystems across a large portion of the region.
