Shashur Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Lahaul and Spiti district, India
Shashur Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery built in the 17th century on a hilltop near Keylong, surrounded by pine forests. The three-story structure houses collections of thangka paintings and religious murals, including detailed representations of Buddhist figures adorning the interior walls.
A Bhutanese lama named Deva Tyatsho founded the monastery in the 17th century, and later Lama Dewa Gyatsho made significant modifications to the building. The site developed to support and preserve Buddhist traditions in the region.
The monastery serves as a gathering place where local communities participate in religious practices and daily rituals. The painted walls and scrolls inside display spiritual figures and stories from Buddhist teachings that become visible as you walk through the halls.
The monastery is accessible from June to November via the Manali-Leh highway, with regular bus services operating from nearby Manali. Plan enough time to explore all floors and view the artworks at a comfortable pace.
During summer months, the monastery hosts Chham festivals where monks perform traditional dances in elaborate costumes as part of spiritual ceremonies. These rare performances attract visitors seeking to witness living Buddhist practices beyond what is usually seen in static displays.
