Becherhaus, Mountain hut in South Tyrol, Italy.
Becherhaus is a mountain hut in the Stubai Alps in South Tyrol, Italy, sitting at 3,195 meters on the edge of the Übertalferner glacier. It offers overnight stays and meals for hikers and climbers passing through this high part of the Alps.
The hut was founded in 1894 by German and Austrian alpine clubs, at a time when mountaineering in the Stubai Alps was growing fast. After World War I, when South Tyrol passed to Italy, Italian alpine clubs took over its management.
The hut carries the name Gino Biasi, an alpine pioneer from the region, and today draws climbers from across Europe. The South Tyrolean character of the place comes through in the cooking and the warm welcome from the people who run it.
The hut is open only in summer and requires a long approach with a lot of elevation gain, so solid mountain experience is needed before setting out. Proper gear, including layers and good boots, is important given the changing conditions at this height.
The hut sits high enough that snow can remain on the ground even in midsummer, which often surprises first-time visitors. Guests who wake early catch the sunrise light moving across the glacier in a way that is simply not visible from lower ground.
