Rifugio Campo Base, Mountain hut in Acceglio, Italy.
Rifugio Campo Base sits at 1650 meters elevation in Valle Maira, facing the Castello-Provenzale mountain range and the Stroppia waterfalls. The lodge provides private rooms with bathrooms and dormitory options with 4 to 8 beds per room.
Built in the 1930s as Vivalda barracks, the building initially housed soldiers monitoring fortifications along the Alpine defensive line. This military role shaped its form for many years.
The restaurant here serves traditional Piedmont food, and you get to taste how mountain communities have always eaten with what grows nearby.
The refuge opens from December through October, and you reach it on foot through mountain terrain. Pack sturdy footwear and be ready for changing weather conditions at this elevation.
A camping area along the Maurin stream provides electrical hookups for tents and RVs from June through September. This addition offers a different way to stay near the mountains.
