Bivacco Barenghi, Mountain bivouac hut in Acceglio, Italy
Bivacco Barenghi is a metal shelter located at 2815 meters elevation on the shores of Lake Vallonasso, with nine sleeping spots and electric lighting powered by solar panels. Inside, wooden finishes provide basic overnight accommodation, though there are no cooking facilities.
The shelter was built in 1958 as a memorial to Beppe Barenghi, a mountaineer from Milan who died on Mount Api in 1954. An expansion in the 1980s improved its capacity and facilities.
This shelter sits on a major hiking route through the Italian Alps and serves walkers doing multi-day mountain journeys. It functions as a meeting point for people exploring the high alpine areas in this region.
Visitors should bring their own food and water since there are no dining facilities at the shelter. Those planning to stay overnight need to be prepared for the high elevation and cool mountain climate.
Lake Vallonasso right beside the shelter is among the highest lakes in the Italian Alps. Many visitors are surprised to discover this body of water exists at such an extreme elevation.
