Hamahiga Island is a triangular landmass in the Yokatsu Islands group, home to three small settlements and fishing ports. The highest point rises to approximately 80 meters.
The island was part of the Chuzan region during the Sanzan period before being incorporated into the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 15th century. This merger was part of a broader political consolidation of the Okinawa Islands.
The island's name reflects a local creation myth about two deities who made their home here. Visitors can still see the cave that features in this story.
The island connects to Henza Island via a bridge roughly 1.5 kilometers long, making it straightforward to reach. Wear sturdy shoes since the pathways are uneven in places.
The island holds several archaeological sites featuring shell mounds and old fortress remains from earlier times. Despite their age, these locations have been only partially examined by researchers.
