Mount Yae, mountain in Japan
Mount Yae is a hill located in Motobu, Nago, on Okinawa with an elevation of about 1180 meters and forested slopes crisscrossed by walking paths. The trails are well-maintained and lead from the base to the summit over roughly one kilometer, taking about thirty minutes to reach the top while providing information about local plants and wildlife.
In the past, local residents used this mountain for gatherings and seasonal festivals, where small traditional events and ceremonies took place to pray for good weather and safety. Today, these customs are less common, but the mountain remains a peaceful place where people connect with nature and their cultural roots.
For local people, this mountain is a symbol of the natural world around them. Families come here for outings, and children learn about the trees and animals as they walk along the trails.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring a light jacket or rain gear since weather can vary by season. There are enough rest points and benches along the trail, but it is best to carry water and snacks, especially if planning to stay for the view or a picnic.
During the cherry blossom season, usually in late January, the slopes turn pink and white with over seven thousand blooming trees. These winter-blooming varieties are a species called Prunus campanulata maxim, believed to come from Taiwan and southern China, and they flower much earlier than cherry trees found on mainland Japan.
