Okinawa At-large district, Electoral district in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan
Okinawa At-large district covers the entire Okinawa Prefecture as a voting area for the upper house of the Japanese Diet. Within its boundaries sit four single-member districts that belong to the Kyushu proportional representation block.
This district was created in 1970, just before Okinawa returned to Japanese control. The initial representatives were elected with staggered terms in the upper house.
Voters in this district care deeply about military base issues, which shapes their voting choices and often produces different results from the rest of Japan.
The district holds two seats in the House of Councillors, with one seat up for election during each regular election cycle. Those interested can find information at local offices or through official websites about how voting works here.
In the 2022 election, this became the only single-seat district in Western Japan where an opposition candidate won. This result shows how different voting patterns can be in this region.
