Tozenji incident, serie di assalti armati condotti ai danni della legazione britannica in Giappone
Tozenji is a small Buddhist temple in the Minato ward of Tokyo, belonging to the Rinzai school. The grounds have a quiet setting and served as the location of the British legation in Japan during the 1800s.
The temple was established at its current location in 1636 and became the British legation site from 1859 onwards. It was attacked multiple times between 1861 and 1862 by samurai opposing the foreign presence.
The temple became a flashpoint where Japanese tradition and Western presence collided during a time of national transformation. The attacks that occurred here represented the deep resistance many felt as their country faced pressure to abandon centuries of isolation.
The site is easily accessible and located in a quiet residential area near Shinagawa. Visitors can still see the main gate and marks on pillars that hint at past violence.
Some of the attackers left behind letters explaining their patriotic reasons for their actions. These messages reveal the personal convictions of men willing to sacrifice their lives for what they saw as defending their nation.
