Hilltop Hotel, Art Deco hotel in Surugadai, Japan
The Hilltop Hotel is a seven-story building in Surugadai designed in Art Deco style with geometric lines and terrazzo patterns throughout its interior. The structure features clean, streamlined decoration and open spaces across its multiple floors.
The building was founded in 1937 by philanthropist Keitaro Sato as a health institute and later served as military housing during World War II. After the war ended, it reopened as a hotel in 1954.
The hotel served as a gathering place for writers and intellectuals who met in its spaces and shaped its identity. This literary past continues to define how the establishment sees itself today.
The hotel has 35 guest rooms and seven restaurants with different cuisines ranging from traditional tempura to Chinese dishes. It is conveniently located near Ochanomizu Station for easy access.
The hotel preserves an unusual feature by using traditional ice-based cooling methods in certain areas rather than modern air conditioning systems. These historical practices remain visible in the building's daily operations.
