Kaikake Onsen, building in Niigata Prefecture, Japan

Kaikake Onsen is a hot spring ryokan in the mountains of Yuzawa, surrounded by thick forest and accessed by a narrow bridge and steep road. The wooden building features traditional architecture with mineral-rich natural baths, a dining room serving local rice-based meals, guest rooms with thick walls designed for snow country, and grounds with ponds containing colorful koi fish fed by spring overflow.

The building was established in 1869 as a traditional wooden structure in this remote mountain location. Historical documents from the Muromachi period mention a monk visiting this site, and the architecture was built to withstand heavy snow and harsh weather typical of the region.

The name Kaikake Onsen comes from the steep mountain pass that leads to this remote location. Guests wear traditional yukata during their stay and bathe in natural hot waters as part of a healing practice passed down through generations.

Access is via a steep mountain pass and narrow bridge, making a personal car or arranged transport service practical options. Rooms offer views of the forest and mountains, the baths are available daily for soaking, and guided activities such as winter snowshoe walks and spring plant foraging classes are offered throughout the year.

The grounds hold about 60 koi fish in ponds fed by hot spring overflow, creating a peaceful scene as guests walk nearby. An older room inside features a metal bowl built into the ceiling that once heated the space with a traditional brazier, showing the craftsmanship of the building's past.
