Sumaura Sanjo Amusement Park, Mountain amusement park in Suma, Kobe, Japan
Sumaura Sanjo Amusement Park sits on Mount Hachibuse in Kobe and features a rotating observation tower with 360-degree views of the city, Akashi Strait Bridge, and Awaji Island. The grounds contain multiple rides and facilities spread across the mountainside, connected by various pathways and transport systems.
The park opened in 1959 under subsidiary management of Sanyo Electric Railway and later came under the railway's direct operation in December 2019. This shift marked a change in how the facility was run and maintained.
The Hatafuri Tea House marks where poet Yosa Buson composed a famous haiku about the spring sea in the 18th century. Visitors can experience this literary connection while enjoying views of the same waters that inspired his words.
Access to the park is by cable car from Sumaura Park Station, with combined tickets available for both transportation and attractions. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are hilly with stairs and pathways throughout the site.
The grounds preserve original equipment from opening day, including a cycle monorail suspended above the forest canopy. A tourist lift also crosses the boundary between Settsu and Harima provinces.
